The Bureau of Local Government Pensions (BLGP), has enlightened retirees of Local Government and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) which became fully operational on 2nd July 2025, on the Additional Pension Benefits (APB) introduced and approved by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun in order to boost the dignity and confidence of the pensioners in the scheme.
Permanent Secretary of the Bureau, Engr. Olufisan Osiyale, gave the insight during a day enlightenment programme organised for pensioners on the operation of the Contributory Pension Scheme at the Bureau's office, Oke- Mosan, Abeokuta.
Speaking further, Engr. Osiyale, revealed that the Additional Pension Benefit (APB) was an initiative of the State Government approved by the Governor to enhance the welfare and quality of life of retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
He explained that APB stood as a lump sum paid directly into eligible retirees' accounts at the point of exiting the service to cushion the effect of the gap between monthly payouts of the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) and Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The BLGP Boss noted that the Dapo Abiodun led administration had recorded notable achievements for retirees under CPS and these include: payment of 100 percent net salary as palliative for retirees who retired between July 2nd and December 31st, 2025; payment of year 2025 Christmas bonus to retirees; and regular remittance of employer/ employee pension contributions.
Speaking earlier, a retired Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Adekunle Adegbite, advised the over 500 participants who were in attendance to make good use of the Additional Pension Benefits, urging them to submit their retirement documents early for immediate processing.
The State Publicity Secretary, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Solomon Bajela, while speaking on behalf of the State President, Comrade Adefesobi Adebayo, commended Governor Abiodun for the approval of Additional Pension Benefit (APB), urging participants to be patient with the present administration, stressing that it meant well for the retirees.
Representative of the Pension Funds Administrators (PFAs), Mr. Ismail Salau, stated that CPS was a safe programme and retirees could get their monthly pension, either through Programmed Withdrawal or Life Annuity. According to him, Programmed Withdrawal is a method by which PFAs pay benefits on monthly basis to retirees, while Life Annuity refers to a method whereby Insurance Companies also pay benefits to retirees on monthly basis, even though they both operate differently, explaining further on how each one works.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mrs. Omolara Fadipe and Mrs. Dorcas Folarin, appreciated the State Government for the enlightenment programme, imploring them to continue to put in place policies that would improve the welfare of retirees.
