A former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide, has resigned her membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Akinjide, a longtime member of the party in Oyo State, conveyed her decision in a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Ona-Ara Local Government Area.
In the letter dated Monday, the former minister said her decision followed careful consideration, noting that she had been a member of the party since 2001.
“This decision was not taken lightly, given the fact that I have been a member of the party since 2001,” she stated.
Titled “Letter of Resignation from the PDP,” the document reads in part: “I hereby formally give you notice of my resignation as a member of the PDP, effective immediately. I came to this difficult decision after a long period of personal reflection.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a member of the party and for the experience and relationships built during my time as a member.
“I appreciate the platform provided for political office and engagement, and I wish the party success in the future.”
A close associate of the former minister, Kehinde Olaosebikan, confirmed the development when contacted.
“It is true; the former minister has resigned her membership of the PDP,” Olaosebikan said.
Akinjide served as Minister of State for the FCT between 2011 and 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan. She also briefly held the position of Supervising Minister for Police Affairs in 2014.
Earlier in her career, she served as Special Assistant to the President on FCT Matters from May 2001 to September 2003, and later as Special Assistant on G77 Matters and Nigerians in the Diaspora.
