The Kano State Ministry of Health has confirmed the death of a woman, Hafsatu Yusuf, shortly after she delivered quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano.

The ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, disclosed in a telephone interview on Thursday that the woman died at about 2:00 a.m. following complications arising from childbirth.

According to him, the deceased experienced persistent post-delivery bleeding, and efforts by medical personnel to stabilise her proved unsuccessful.

“She had been bleeding since after delivery, and all efforts by doctors to control the situation were unsuccessful,” he said.

The quintuplets, three boys and two girls, were successfully delivered and are currently in stable condition, receiving medical care at the facility.

K/Na’isa further confirmed that the deceased has been buried in accordance with Islamic rites at her residence in Hotoro. He appealed to members of the public to support the newborns with essential items, including baby formula and other necessities.

The incident occurred barely a day after the Kano State Government announced that it had assumed responsibility for the medical care of the mother and her babies following the delivery.

In an earlier statement, the ministry had indicated that both the mother and the quintuplets were placed under close medical supervision after the birth.

The husband of the deceased, Malam Salisu Nufi’u, had commended the state government for its timely intervention and support.

Authorities in the state have reiterated their commitment to strengthening maternal and child healthcare services, with a focus on reducing mortality rates.
