The immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has said his resignation was motivated by the need to preserve peace, stability, and effective governance in the state.
In a letter dated March 27, 2026, addressed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo described his decision as voluntary and taken in good faith.
“I have taken this step in the spirit of responsibility and statesmanship, to allow the government and the state to move forward without undue distractions,” he stated.
Gwarzo explained that the decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection on the prevailing political situation. He stressed that his resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing but as a deliberate effort to safeguard institutional integrity and uphold democratic values.
“This resignation is made voluntarily and should not be construed as an admission of any wrongdoing, but a decision in the interest of public service,” he added.
He cited Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which permits public office holders to resign from their positions.
The former deputy governor also expressed appreciation to the people of Kano State, the state executive council, the Kano State House of Assembly, the New Nigeria People’s Party, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders for their support during his tenure.
His resignation comes amid ongoing political and legal tensions surrounding the office, including impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly.
