The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has released former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on what sources describe as compassionate grounds.

El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, following his arrest shortly after leaving the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he was reportedly interrogated for 48 hours.

The anti-graft agency had arraigned him on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering before a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna. The court had adjourned hearing on his bail application to March 31.

However, his release comes hours after the death of his mother in Cairo. Family sources indicate that the decision to free him was influenced by the need to allow him participate in burial arrangements, as her remains are expected to be flown into Nigeria on Saturday.

An ally of the former governor confirmed the development, while his son, Bashir El-Rufai, also acknowledged that his father had regained freedom.

El-Rufai has consistently denied all allegations brought against him.
