A former senator who represented the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Philip Aduda, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Aduda announced his resignation in a letter dated March 17, addressed to the party leadership in his Karu ward in the FCT, citing the protracted internal crisis within the party as the reason for his decision.
A known ally of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, Aduda expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it afforded him throughout his political career.
“The party provided me with the platform to serve my people in various elective positions,” he noted.
While he did not disclose his next political move, associates and political observers speculate that he may align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Since losing his senatorial bid in the 2023 general elections, Aduda has reportedly been working closely with Nyesom Wike in an unofficial capacity.
In the 2023 elections, Aduda lost his seat to Ireti Kingibe, who currently represents the FCT in the 11th Senate.
Although Kingibe has since aligned with a coalition platform, her political trajectory has been marked by tensions with Wike. The FCT minister has publicly criticised her performance and vowed to challenge her return to the Senate.
In response, Wike has accused the lawmaker of failing to meet the expectations of her constituents.
Aduda’s defection adds to the ongoing shifts within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly within the opposition PDP, which has continued to grapple with internal divisions following the 2023 general elections.
