The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has issued a strong warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over recent political developments, cautioning that current actions could undermine the 2027 general elections.
The group expressed concern that unfolding events within the political space, if not urgently addressed, may erode public confidence in the electoral process and threaten the credibility of future polls.
Speaking on the development, ACF National Publicity Secretary, T. A. Muhammad-Baba, highlighted issues surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC), particularly the reported removal of its leadership led by David Mark.
He also raised concerns over the proposed voter revalidation exercise reportedly being considered by INEC, noting that such moves are creating uncertainty within the political environment.
According to him, these developments could weaken public trust in the electoral system and cast doubts over the integrity of the 2027 elections.
Muhammad-Baba warned that if the situation is not properly managed, it could trigger avoidable tension across the country, which is already grappling with security and economic challenges.
“It looks like every step taken by INEC or the political authorities is putting the 2027 election into jeopardy. It is not too late. We call on the government, INEC, and all concerned stakeholders to retrace their steps and stand by the principles and tenets of democracy.
Otherwise, these developments portend a crisis, which is not good for the country,” he said.
He added that Nigeria is already facing serious security concerns and economic hardship, warning that introducing political instability could further worsen the situation for citizens.
The ACF spokesman urged all stakeholders, including the federal government and electoral authorities, to ensure that their actions strengthen democratic institutions rather than weaken them.
He emphasised that transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to the rule of law must guide all electoral processes moving forward.
Muhammad-Baba further cautioned that any action perceived as politically motivated could deepen divisions and reduce public confidence in governance ahead of the 2027 elections.
