The African Democratic Congress has assumed the Senate Minority Whip position following the appointment of Tony Nwoye as the new Minority Whip.
The development comes after the resignation of former Minority Whip, Osita Ngwu, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Announcing the change on the floor of the Senate of Nigeria, Senate President Godswill Akpabio disclosed that Nwoye’s nomination was forwarded by the Senate Minority Caucus.
With the latest realignments, the ADC has emerged as the leading opposition party in the Senate, reportedly holding nine seats compared to the PDP’s five.
Despite the shift, Abba Moro of the PDP continues to serve as Minority Leader, a situation that has drawn scrutiny from political observers.
A political analyst, John Oloriegbe, noted that the ADC should ordinarily nominate a new Minority Leader, given its current status as the dominant opposition party.
He, however, explained that such a transition would depend on formal communication from ADC senators to the Senate leadership.
Further changes were recorded during plenary, as Anthony Siyako Yaro (Gombe South) defected from the PDP to the APC, citing internal party crisis. Similarly, Ahmed Aliyu Wadada of the Social Democratic Party confirmed his defection to the APC, stating that the decision, initially taken in August 2025, was due to leadership challenges within the party.
