Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, a feature that previously enabled eligible prepaid customers to borrow airtime or data and repay upon their next recharge.
The company disclosed this in a statement on Friday, with its Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, explaining that the move is part of ongoing efforts to align operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Despite the suspension, Airtel assured customers that access to regular airtime and data purchases remains unaffected, with services continuing seamlessly through existing channels. The company also emphasized that the pause will not impact network performance or overall service quality nationwide.
Commenting on the development, the Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the decision as both necessary and responsible.
“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he stated.
The telecom operator added that customers will be duly informed once there are updates regarding the reinstatement of the credit services.
The development comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based offerings within Nigeria’s telecom industry, as operators adjust to stricter compliance expectations.
