Ambassador-Designate to Algeria Dies at 50 | The Alternative News

 


The Federal Government has announced the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away at the age of 50.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

According to the ministry, Lele died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, following a protracted illness.

The ministry described the late diplomat as a dedicated officer who served the country with distinction. Until his death, he was Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry.

Lele, a career diplomat, was recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, after his nomination was confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.

Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, he studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and served in Nigeria’s foreign missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, described him as a hardworking and humble officer whose contributions would be greatly missed.

The ministry noted that his passing is a significant loss to his family, the Foreign Service, and the nation at large.

Lele was buried on Wednesday in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites. The government extended condolences to his family, associates, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for the repose of his soul.
