The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, stating that it will now be conducted after the 2027 general elections.

The decision was reached during a meeting between the commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

According to INEC, the postponement followed extensive deliberations with its senior officials and RECs from across the country.

The commission explained that the exercise, aimed at updating the National Register of Voters, will now take place after the next general election cycle.

INEC emphasised that the voter revalidation exercise remains a critical part of its constitutional responsibility to maintain a credible and up-to-date voter register.

“The voter revalidation exercise remains a critical component of the commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters,” the statement read.
