No Accommodation for 13 Months — UniCal’s Best Graduate Shares Struggles | The Alternative News

An outstanding graduate of the University of Calabar (UniCal), Offiong Edet, has revealed that he lived without personal accommodation for 13 months during his academic journey.

Edet, who emerged as the best graduating student at the institution’s 38th convocation ceremony, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the event held in Calabar on Friday.

A graduate of Business Education, Edet said he resorted to sleeping in classrooms or staying with friends due to financial hardship.

“I had no money to secure personal accommodation because of my poor background,” he said.

Despite the challenges, he maintained a strong academic record through determination and discipline.

“I was able to achieve academic success because I remained focused throughout the journey. Although I had no shelter, I attended classes regularly and completed all assignments and tests,” he added.

Edet emphasised that discipline and humility play a key role in academic success, noting that students who remain committed are less likely to face difficulties.

“I approached my academic tasks with a strong sense of discipline. I saw school and learning as my master, and myself as the servant,” he said.

He also highlighted systemic challenges in the education sector, including delays in the release of results, poor moral supervision, and lack of dedication among some students.

“The authorities should enforce discipline more strictly, while students must remain focused and committed to achieving their goals,” he stated.

According to NAN, the university graduated a total of 10,820 students during the ceremony, with 52 earning first-class honours. A breakdown of the results showed that 2,390 graduated with second-class upper division, 5,819 with second-class lower, 666 with third-class, and 246 with pass degrees.
