Terrorists Detonate IED in Niger Communities, Four Feared Dead | The Alternative News

Suspected terrorists have intensified attacks on border communities in Niger State, detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Babanna axis of Borgu Local Government Area, leaving at least four people feared dead.

The incident occurred on Sunday when an explosive device was triggered on a strategic bridge along the Lumma–Babanna corridor, a vital access route linking several communities to the Benin Republic. The bridge had reportedly been targeted in a similar attack barely two weeks earlier, raising concerns over a coordinated effort to disrupt movement in the area.

Casualty figures remain unclear, with initial reports indicating four fatalities. However, security sources disclosed that one of the victims may have been shot while attempting to cross the affected area on a motorcycle.

A source familiar with the situation noted that the repeated attacks suggest a deliberate attempt by armed groups to isolate communities by obstructing emergency response and cutting off essential supplies.

Eyewitness accounts described widespread panic following the explosion. A resident, who spoke anonymously, said a truck conveying yams to the Babanna weekly market triggered the device.

“The Lumma-Babanna road is our only lifeline. If this continues, we will be completely cut off,” the resident said.
Communities in the area have faced persistent attacks in recent months, including killings, arson, and destruction of property, leaving residents in a state of fear and uncertainty.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, Abiodun Wasiu, said a motorcyclist was shot dead, while a truck travelling toward Wawa ran over another IED.

“The explosion damaged the vehicle, and the driver was affected,” he stated.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
