A United States-based policy group, Von Batten-Montague York L.C., has raised concerns over recent developments in Nigeria’s electoral process, warning it will escalate the issue to former U.S. President Donald Trump and members of Congress.
The firm’s reaction follows the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid an ongoing internal crisis.
The move comes at a time of rising political tension ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections, with growing concerns over the ability of opposition parties to effectively participate in the process.
INEC had announced the withdrawal of recognition for the ADC leadership and the suspension of all official engagements with the party, pending the resolution of court cases linked to its leadership dispute.
The decision has effectively stalled the activities of the opposition party at a critical point in the electoral cycle.
In a statement issued on Friday, the U.S.-based firm warned that INEC’s action could have serious implications for Nigeria’s democracy.
“The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission has withdrawn recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress and suspended all official engagement with the party pending ongoing litigation,” the firm said.
It described the development as one that has “effectively frozen” a major opposition platform at a crucial moment.
The firm cautioned that the situation could weaken political competition and limit the organisational capacity of opposition groups.
“At a time when Nigerians expect free, fair, and credible elections, any development that disrupts political participation, creates institutional uncertainty, or undermines the perceived independence of electoral bodies must be addressed with urgency and transparency,” the statement added.
Highlighting Nigeria’s global relevance, the organisation noted that the country’s electoral integrity carries international significance.
“Nigeria is not only Africa’s largest democracy but also a critical strategic partner of the United States in regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism. The integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process is therefore of direct importance to U.S. interests and global stability.”
The firm further disclosed plans to formally brief U.S. lawmakers and the Trump camp in Washington to ensure sustained international attention on Nigeria’s democratic process.
“Accordingly, the firm will present its concerns to members of the United States Congress and the Trump Administration to ensure that the importance of free, fair, and transparent democratic processes in Nigeria remains firmly on the international agenda.”
It also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that upcoming elections meet global democratic standards.
“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the conduct and outcome of the forthcoming elections are beyond reproach, free from doubt, and fully reflective of the will of the Nigerian people.”
