2027: ‘I’m not Distracted’ - Obi Reacts to Jonathan’s Presidential Bid | The Alternative News

Peter Obi, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said he is not distracted by speculations surrounding a possible 2027 presidential bid by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The former Anambra State governor stated that his primary focus remains on providing credible leadership aimed at rebuilding Nigeria.

Obi made this known on Tuesday night shortly after undergoing a screening exercise conducted by the party at its national secretariat in Abuja.

He dismissed claims that he had emerged as a consensus presidential candidate of the party, stressing that the process was open, transparent, and democratic.

“How can it be based on consensus? The party opened up the expression of interest forms for people to buy. I bought the form. As the party said, I’m the only one who expressed interest. That’s it,” Obi said.

Reacting to growing discussions about Jonathan possibly joining the presidential race, Obi maintained that democracy thrives when eligible citizens present themselves for service.

“Democracy is about people offering themselves for service and being voted for,” he said.

“I’m not in any way going around looking for who is contesting. I’m concentrating on how to build a better Nigeria.”

Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, also commended the NDC for conducting what he described as a credible screening process.

The screening committee was chaired by Sam Egwu, a former governor of Ebonyi State.

“At NDC, we are choosing to do things properly. When we say there is going to be a screening, there is going to be a screening. That is democracy in action,” he added.
