Oyo Abduction: Nigerians can Defend Themselves - Presidency | The Alternative News

The Presidency has stated that Nigerians have the right to defend themselves against attacks, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to curb insecurity across the country.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, made the assertion on Wednesday while reacting to the recent abduction incident in Oyo State.

Gunmen had on Friday invaded L.A. Primary School in the Esiele community, located in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting teachers and pupils during school hours, an incident that has sparked fear among residents and parents.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Bwala assured that the government remains committed to ending killings and restoring safety nationwide.

He stressed that while government efforts are ongoing, citizens also have a constitutional right to protect themselves when faced with imminent danger.

According to him, self-defence is a legitimate right, particularly when individuals are attacked in their homes or communities.

“The constitution guarantees every citizen the right to self-defence,” Bwala said. “If someone comes to harm you, you have the right to defend yourself within the provisions of the law.”

He, however, clarified that Nigerians are not permitted to bear certain arms unless authorised, but noted that communities can organise themselves, including forming vigilante groups, with government approval.

Bwala added that the Tinubu administration would not relent in its efforts to tackle insecurity, expressing optimism that collective action and intelligence sharing among citizens would help bring an end to violent crimes.

The presidential aide also linked rising insecurity to pre-election periods, describing it as part of a “crisis economy” exploited by criminal elements, while urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and cooperative with security agencies.
