A fire outbreak on Monday disrupted activities at the oncology unit of the National Hospital Abuja, prompting the emergency evacuation of patients and medical personnel.
The incident, reportedly caused by an electrical fault, was swiftly contained before it could spread to other sections of the hospital.
Patients receiving treatment at the oncology department, including those undergoing chemotherapy and emergency care, were immediately relocated to safer units within the facility as a precautionary measure.
Although no casualties were recorded, traces of smoke lingered in the affected area hours after the incident, forcing hospital authorities to temporarily suspend operations in the unit.
An eyewitness account indicated that the fire may have been preceded by persistent power fluctuations and the smell of burning electrical components.
“At first, the light kept flickering before power went out completely. Shortly after, there was a strong smell of something burning electrically, but the seriousness was not immediately realised,” the witness said.
“Moments later, smoke spread across the area and everyone was asked to evacuate. Patients, including those in emergency care and chemotherapy sessions, were quickly moved to other units.”
Hospital officials have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but normal activities are expected to resume after safety assessments are concluded.
