Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed condolences to the family of a teacher, Michael Oyedokun, who was killed by suspected bandits after being abducted from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Oyedokun was among the teachers kidnapped during an attack on the school. Authorities confirmed his death following the emergence of a disturbing video allegedly released by the abductors.
The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of other victims still in captivity, as residents and families continue to call on security agencies and the state government to intensify rescue efforts.
Confirming the development, the Special Adviser on Media to the governor, Suleimon Olanrewaju, said the government is committed to securing the release of the remaining victims through both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.
He disclosed that about six suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping, with additional persons of interest apprehended by other security outfits within the state.
Olanrewaju also extended sympathies to members of the security agencies, including soldiers, the Amotekun Corps, and local vigilantes who lost their lives during rescue operations.
According to him, the operatives were killed after encountering improvised explosive devices (IEDs) allegedly planted by the abductors. He added that injured personnel are responding to treatment, while the government has pledged to cater for their welfare.
The governor appealed to families of the victims, religious leaders, and the public to remain patient, assuring that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of those still held captive.
Reports indicate that seven teachers were abducted during the attack, which occurred on May 15, alongside the school principal and several students.
The incident has further raised concerns over rising insecurity in parts of the state, coming weeks after a failed kidnap attempt along the Ibadan-Ijebu road that reportedly claimed a life.
