Ganduje Denies Endorsing Sanusi as Emir, says Supreme Court will Decide - The Alternative News

Former Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has clarified that his recent remarks referring to Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano were not an endorsement of his claim to the throne.

Ganduje stated that the ongoing emirship dispute in Kano would ultimately be resolved by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, urging all parties to await its final judgment.

The former governor’s comments followed a public event where he addressed Sanusi as Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs, a gesture that drew applause and sparked widespread interpretation of a possible endorsement.

However, in a statement issued by his former Chief of Staff, Muhammad Garba, Ganduje explained that his remarks were merely a sign of respect in a public setting.

“It is important to clarify that what happened was simply an expression of respect in a public gathering. It should not be misconstrued as an endorsement,” he said.

Ganduje emphasised that he lacks the legal authority to determine or endorse any claimant to the emirship, noting that the matter remains before the courts.

The emirship tussle dates back to 2020 when Ganduje, as governor, deposed Sanusi and appointed Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir. In 2024, the current governor, Abba Yusuf, reinstated Sanusi, leading to fresh legal disputes as Bayero challenged his removal.

Ganduje noted that the current legal position recognises Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano and Sanusi as the 14th Emir, pending the final determination by the Supreme Court.

The apex court has adjourned hearing on the matter to April 2027.
