Gunmen Abduct 10 from Emir’s Palace in Kwara after Fresh Attack - The Alternative News

Gunmen have abducted 10 persons from the palace of the Emir of Yashikira in Baruten Local Government Area, barely 48 hours after a deadly attack on worshippers in Ekiti Local Government Area left three people dead and several others kidnapped.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the attackers launched a coordinated assault in the early hours of Monday, targeting both the emir’s palace and the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters simultaneously.

She disclosed that the assailants struck at about 2:00 a.m., setting parts of the palace ablaze and abducting 10 victims to an unknown destination. However, police operatives on duty successfully repelled the attack on the station.

The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, has since ordered a full-scale, intelligence-led operation involving security agencies, including the military, forest guards, and vigilantes, to track down the perpetrators and rescue the victims.

The police boss vowed that security operatives would not succumb to intimidation by criminal elements, stressing that all necessary resources would be deployed to dismantle the network of the attackers and restore peace in the area.

Residents of Yashikira and surrounding communities have been assured of intensified security presence, with ongoing surveillance and bush-combing operations across suspected hideouts.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in parts of the South-West and North-Central regions. It follows a recent attack in Oyo State, where gunmen invaded communities in the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis of Oriire, abducting students and staff from several schools, including Community High School and L.A. Primary School.

During that attack, an assistant headmaster, Joel Adesiyan, and a commercial motorcyclist were reportedly killed, sparking outrage nationwide.

The string of attacks underscores growing security challenges and the urgent need for strengthened intelligence, community vigilance, and coordinated security responses across affected regions.
