‘I am Not Going to Shed Tears; If You Hit Me, I Hit You’ — Oshiomhole Reacts to Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

Former Edo State governor and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has urged the Federal Government to take decisive action against businesses linked to South Africa operating in Nigeria, following renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians abroad.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Oshiomhole called for the revocation of operating licences of major South African companies, including MTN Group and MultiChoice Group.

He argued that Nigeria must respond firmly to what he described as persistent hostility towards its citizens.

“I am not going to shed tears. If you hit me, I hit you. I think it is appropriate in diplomacy. It is an economic struggle,” Oshiomhole said.

The senator further stated that while some South Africans accuse Nigerians of taking their jobs, affected citizens could return home and take advantage of employment opportunities provided by foreign companies operating within Nigeria.

“When we hit back, the President of South Africa will not only talk but will also go on his knees to recognise that Nigeria cannot be intimidated,” he added.

Oshiomhole emphasised that while any individual accused of crimes should face justice under the law, the killing and destruction of Nigerian-owned businesses under the guise of xenophobia must not be tolerated.

Reports indicate that several Nigerians in South Africa have been attacked, with properties and businesses destroyed in the ongoing unrest, further straining relations between both countries.
