The United States has warned that it is prepared to respond decisively to any aggression by Iran in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, despite stating it is not seeking conflict.
Speaking on Tuesday, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, said any Iranian attack on vessels navigating the vital shipping route would attract a “devastating” response.
“We’re not looking for a fight. But Iran also cannot be allowed to block innocent countries and their goods from an international waterway,” Hegseth told reporters.
“If you attack American troops or innocent commercial shipping, you will face overwhelming and devastating American firepower,” he added.
Also commenting, Dan Caine said American forces are fully prepared to resume large-scale combat operations if directed.
He stressed that Washington’s restraint should not be mistaken for weakness, noting that the U.S. Central Command and allied forces remain on standby.
Caine said the joint force “remains ready to resume major combat operations against Iran if ordered to do so,” underscoring heightened tensions in the region.
