The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has announced Saturday, June 6, 2026, as the date for a bye-election to fill the vacant councillorship seat in Iperu III Ward 5, Ikenne Local Government Area.
The Chairman of the Commission, Babatunde Osibodu, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Palace Hall of the Ebi of Idena Land in Iperu Remo.
Osibodu explained that the bye-election became necessary following the death of the incumbent councillor, Nurudeen Bakare, noting that the period calls for reflection on his service and contributions to the community.
He emphasized that the stakeholders’ engagement was part of efforts to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process, urging all participants to work together in choosing a worthy successor committed to integrity and effective representation.
In his remarks, the Olumogun Adimula of Idena Remo, Oba Luqman Adebambo Salami, commended OGSIEC for organizing the forum, describing it as a step toward inclusiveness and strengthening public confidence in the electoral system. He noted that the era of imposing candidates on communities is gradually giving way to due democratic processes.
Also speaking, Chairman of Ikenne Local Government Area, Jamiu Ashimi, lauded the Commission’s efforts, particularly during the ward’s mourning period. He described the meeting as timely and reassuring, adding that it restores a sense of direction among residents.
Ashimi further pledged the local government’s support for the successful conduct of the bye-election.
Highlights of the meeting included the presentation of the election timetable and guidelines by the Resident Electoral Officer, as well as an interactive session with stakeholders.
The meeting attracted community leaders, traditional rulers, political party representatives, and residents, forming a crucial part of preparations for the forthcoming bye-election in Iperu III Ward 5.
