Family members, colleagues and sympathisers on Friday gathered in Ogbomoso to bid farewell to Joel Adesiyan, one of the teachers killed during last week’s attacks on schools in Oyo State.
The burial ceremony, held at Ayegun Baptist Church, was marked by grief as mourners paid their last respects amid tears and emotional tributes.
Adesiyan, an assistant headmaster at Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, was among those killed when gunmen invaded communities along the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis in Oriire Local Government Area on April 15.
The attackers, who reportedly rode on motorcycles, abducted dozens of students and seven teachers from Community High School, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School during the raid.
During the assault, Adesiyan and a commercial motorcyclist were shot dead.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that seven teachers were abducted, while another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was later killed in captivity.
A viral video circulating earlier in the week triggered widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of the remaining abductees.
Meanwhile, reports claiming that the victims had been released have been dismissed by the state government and the police as false.
