The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, Basiru Rasheed Orelope, in connection with the death of a 35-year-old woman, Rukayat Rafiu, in Ibadan.
The arrest was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, who said the incident was reported by two individuals after the suspect brought the deceased’s body to her family residence under suspicious circumstances.
According to the police, preliminary findings revealed no visible marks of violence on the deceased.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that the woman was his customer who purchased KEDI supplement products from him. He explained that both of them travelled to Ago-Iwoye, where he lodged her in his rented apartment.
Orelope claimed he later found the woman gasping for breath while holding an inhaler. He added that he rushed her for medical attention, but she was confirmed dead. He subsequently transported her body to her family home in Ibadan, an action that raised suspicion and prompted a report to the police.
The police said the body has been deposited at a morgue along Akala Express Road for preservation and autopsy.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
The command assured the public that it would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
