Kwankwaso Denies Presidential Ambition, Dismisses 2027 Speculation | The Alternative News

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, has stated that he has neither declared interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election nor endorsed any aspirant, describing ongoing speculations as premature and unfounded.

The clarification follows rumours linking Kwankwaso to a potential joint presidential ticket with Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State. The speculation gained traction after a national summit of opposition parties held in Ibadan, with supporters of both politicians circulating campaign posters on social media.

There were also reports suggesting that both politicians were considering leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) amid uncertainty over the party’s presidential ticket.

However, in a statement issued on Saturday night, Kwankwaso dismissed the claims, emphasising that no final decision has been taken regarding his political future or that of his associates.

He noted that the ADC has yet to zone its presidential ticket or take any position on a candidate, stressing that he has not declared any intention to run.

Kwankwaso also referenced the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which voided an earlier decision of the Court of Appeal concerning the party’s leadership crisis. The apex court directed the faction led by David Mark to return to the Federal High Court for further proceedings.

According to Kwankwaso, the ruling has placed the party in a “precarious position,” prompting consultations with stakeholders across political groups, including the NDC and the People's Redemption Party (PRP), to determine the best course of action.

He added that his absence from recent ADC meetings was due to personal commitments that had been duly communicated to the party leadership, dismissing suggestions of an imminent defection.

Kwankwaso assured that any decision regarding his political direction would be officially communicated through appropriate channels.
