The Nigerian Army has explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest of social media influencer Justice Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, citing concerns over alleged subversive engagements with military personnel.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, the Army said the influencer was arrested following preliminary investigations into his interactions with soldiers.
According to the statement, Chidiebere had shared social media posts highlighting complaints by soldiers regarding feeding and welfare. However, the Army said further findings indicated that his engagement extended beyond welfare advocacy.
“Preliminary report reveals that the soldiers discussed a wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere, who seemed to be inciting soldiers to create discontent within the system,” the statement read.
The Army added that some of the conversations allegedly bordered on subversion, warning that such actions could have serious implications for discipline and national security.
“A situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security,” it stated.
The military confirmed that Chidiebere was arrested alongside the soldiers involved. While the soldiers remain in military custody, the influencer has been handed over to civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Army also linked the arrest to an alleged breach of its social media policy and attempts to misinform the public, maintaining that its actions were lawful.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to the rule of law and will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the influencer’s wife has appealed to authorities for his release, expressing concern over his sudden disappearance and its impact on their family.
“Please Nigerian government, bring my husband back to me. My children need their father,” she said.
The arrest has drawn criticism from some activists, including Omoyele Sowore, who called for Chidiebere’s release, alleging that his actions were limited to raising concerns about alleged misconduct and conditions faced by soldiers.
