Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary, citing the need to prioritise peace, unity and stability in the state.
Fubara made this known in a statement he personally issued on Wednesday night, explaining that his decision followed deep reflection and wide consultations with family, friends and political associates.
According to him, stepping down from the race was an act of sacrifice in the interest of the greater good of Rivers State.
“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries. I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party,” he said.
The governor emphasised that leadership requires sacrifice, noting that personal ambition must sometimes give way to collective interest.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he added.
Fubara also acknowledged the support of his followers, expressing gratitude for their loyalty and sacrifices throughout his political journey.
While admitting that his decision might disappoint many supporters, he urged them to remain calm and trust that his actions were guided by the overall interest of the state.
In a reflective tone, the governor hinted at underlying pressures, stating that some realities were best left unsaid for the sake of peace.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he said.
Fubara maintained that his withdrawal was not borne out of weakness or fear, but rather from conviction and a desire to allow the state move forward peacefully.
He reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
Meanwhile, the APC had earlier screened Fubara and Kingsley Chinda, an ally of Nyesom Wike, ahead of the governorship primary scheduled to hold on Friday.
