Why Impeachment Proceedings Were Dropped Against Fubara - Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has explained that the impeachment proceedings against Siminalayi Fubara were dropped as part of a political agreement aimed at restoring peace in Rivers State.

Wike disclosed that the understanding reached was that the impeachment move would be halted on the condition that Governor Fubara would not pursue a second-term ambition and would also refrain from certain political actions, including participation in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship process.

According to him, Fubara’s decision to withdraw from the APC governorship primary did not come as a surprise, noting that it aligned with the earlier agreement intended to ease the prolonged political tension in the state.

The crisis between Wike and Fubara had escalated into a power struggle involving lawmakers, many of whom are loyal to the FCT minister, leading to attempts to impeach the governor.

Wike further stated that the resolution was influenced by efforts to maintain stability, following interventions reportedly backed by Bola Tinubu.

Meanwhile, Kingsley Chinda, an ally of Wike, emerged as the winner of the APC governorship primary, with Wike expressing confidence in his capacity to govern the state effectively.
