Envoy: Most Nigerians in South Africa Undocumented as FG Seeks Compensation for Lost Assets

Nigeria’s acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Alexander Ajayi, has revealed that a majority of Nigerians residing in the country are undocumented, as the Federal Government moves to seek compensation for properties and businesses abandoned by repatriated citizens.

Ajayi disclosed this during an interview on  Channel TV, noting that the government is taking steps beyond evacuation by documenting assets left behind in South Africa.

His remarks come amid renewed xenophobic tensions in South Africa, where African immigrants, particularly Nigerians, Ghanaians, and Zimbabweans, have faced increasing hostility. The situation escalated following a June 30 ultimatum issued by local groups demanding undocumented migrants leave the country.

On Tuesday, another batch of Nigerian returnees arrived at the  in Lagos from Johannesburg. This marks the second official evacuation exercise, following the earlier return of 258 Nigerians on June 11 via a chartered flight operated by Air Peace. A separate group of 66 returnees had also arrived on June 24.

Ajayi explained that many of those returning chose to leave voluntarily ahead of the planned protests. He added that the Federal Government has begun compiling detailed records of properties left behind, including businesses, vehicles, and other movable and immovable assets.

“We have asked our people to accurately document everything they are leaving behind. This will enable us to engage the South African government for possible compensation,” he said.

According to the envoy, discussions have already begun with South African authorities to facilitate the process. He stressed that the government is committed to ensuring that the investments of Nigerians are not lost or unlawfully taken over.

“This effort will not end with repatriation. We will systematically follow up on all information provided and present verified claims for compensation,” Ajayi added.

Meanwhile, South African President  has called for calm, urging citizens to conduct any protests peacefully. He warned that while the right to demonstrate is protected, acts of violence and criminality will not be tolerated.

The Nigerian government continues to monitor the situation closely as diplomatic engagements intensify over the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad.
