FG Declares Friday Public Holiday for Democracy Day - The Alternative News

The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has declared Friday, June 12, a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s history, honouring the courage, resilience and sacrifices of citizens whose struggles paved the way for democratic governance.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to upholding democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

“The administration has pledged to uphold these principles without compromise,” he said.

He added that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures to safeguard lives and property across the country.

The minister noted that a secure and stable environment remains vital to sustaining democracy and advancing national development.

He also urged Nigerians to use the holiday as a moment for civic reflection, encouraging citizens to recommit to lawful conduct, responsible engagement, and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he stated.
