The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, has called on Nigeria’s security chiefs to decisively tackle terrorism within 90 days or step down from their positions.
Adeboye made the statement in a video shared on the church’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, where he urged the Federal Government to act swiftly in addressing the nation’s worsening security challenges.
“If I were asked to make suggestions, I would say quietly to our government, move fast. And tell our security chiefs, get rid of these terrorists within 90 days, or resign,” he said.
The cleric stressed that while religious leaders can offer advice, the ultimate responsibility for national security lies with the Commander-in-Chief.
Adeboye recalled advising former President Muhammadu Buhari to issue a similar directive to security chiefs in the past, noting that although the order was given, it was not effectively enforced after the deadline elapsed.
According to him, Buhari had, in 2021, instructed service chiefs to decisively deal with bandits, kidnappers, and their sponsors, urging a shift from reactive to proactive operations.
“He ran with that advice, but he didn’t follow it through. Because he gave the order as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The three months went, and the work was not done,” Adeboye said.
The RCCG leader further emphasized the need for the current administration to go beyond targeting terrorists by also dismantling their support networks, including financiers, regardless of their influence.
“When giving orders to the service chiefs this time around, we should make it clear to them that they are not only to eliminate the terrorists, they should eliminate their sponsors, no matter how influential they may be,” he added.
Adeboye’s remarks come amid growing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria, following a series of kidnappings and attacks across the country.
On May 15, gunmen attacked two schools in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, abducting several pupils and teachers. One of the abducted teachers was later reportedly killed in a viral video.
In response, President Bola Tinubu ordered the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to secure the release of the victims.
The incident is part of a disturbing trend of abductions and violent attacks recorded in various parts of the country in recent months.
