President Bola Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly of Nigeria on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
Naija News reports that the President will also deliver a nationwide broadcast to commemorate the historic occasion.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja. The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga.
Akume announced the programme while inaugurating an inter-ministerial committee tasked with coordinating preparations for the celebration at the Shehu Shagari Complex. He urged members to commence work immediately, noting that only 10 days remained before the anniversary.
According to the SGF, activities will begin with a World Press Conference on June 4. Special Juma’at prayers are scheduled for June 5, followed by an inter-denominational church service on June 7. A public lecture will hold on June 9, while youth- and women-focused programmes are slated for June 10.
The events will culminate on June 12 with the President’s address to the National Assembly, a nationwide broadcast, and a Democracy Day Gala Night.
Akume stated that the Federal Government is mindful of the current national mood and its commitment to fiscal responsibility, adding that this year’s celebration would be modest.
He also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 democratic struggle, particularly the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, noting that his sacrifice laid the foundation for Nigeria’s present democratic institutions.
The SGF said the annual commemoration remains a fitting way to honour pro-democracy heroes while celebrating the country’s democratic progress. He added that it would also provide an opportunity for the Tinubu administration to highlight achievements in strengthening institutions and implementing reforms.
The inter-ministerial committee, chaired by Akume, includes ministers from key portfolios such as information, interior, FCT, health, foreign affairs, finance, defence, and budget and economic planning. Other members include the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, presidential aides, and permanent secretaries.
The committee is mandated to plan, organise, and execute all approved activities, document them for posterity, and co-opt relevant stakeholders where necessary. Akume further directed all subcommittee secretaries to submit their budgets promptly to ensure seamless implementation of the programmes.
