Kemi Badenoch Says Nigeria’s Oil Wealth Has Not Delivered Reliable Electricity - The Alternative News

The leader of the Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has said Nigeria’s status as an oil-producing nation has not translated into consistent electricity supply for its citizens.

Speaking in an interview with The Spectator, Badenoch reflected on her upbringing in Nigeria, noting that her early experiences shaped her political outlook.

“My belief that we need to drill our oil and gas comes from growing up in a country… Nigeria is an oil-producing country, never had electricity,” she said.

She argued that the presence of natural resources alone does not guarantee development, attributing challenges to what she described as poor public policy.

“It is very easy to have resources under the ground, but… public policy means that you can’t use it,” she added.

Badenoch also drew comparisons between current UK energy policies under Ed Miliband and governance approaches during Nigeria’s military era in the 1980s and 1990s, suggesting similarities in state control and economic management.

The Conservative leader further stated that her experiences growing up in a developing country have influenced her views on governance and economic policy, adding that she does not want the United Kingdom to face similar challenges.

She emphasised the need to protect what she described as Britain’s economic strength and cultural identity, warning against taking the country’s history and prosperity for granted.
