President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to attend and address world leaders at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled to open in New York City in September.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed the President’s participation on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after a meeting with Tinubu.
According to Ibrahim, the President has approved Nigeria’s participation and will take part in several high-level side events, including discussions on energy, education, and hospital management.
“The president was able to give us his word. Now he will come to UNGA this September,” Ibrahim stated.
He noted that Tinubu’s presence at the global gathering will provide an opportunity for Nigeria to showcase ongoing reforms to the international community.
Tinubu previously attended the 78th session of the UNGA in person, while Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him at the 79th and 80th sessions.
Ibrahim added that the President will also engage global stakeholders on border security challenges in West Africa, describing the region’s porous borders as a major concern. He revealed that the Federal Government is collaborating with the UN on a regional border policing initiative and will seek broader international support during the assembly.
The envoy further disclosed that a possible meeting between Tinubu and Donald Trump could take place on the sidelines of the event.
Tinubu is expected to sit in the front row and deliver his address at about 10:45 a.m. New York time.
The 81st UN General Assembly will officially open on September 8, with the general debate scheduled to hold from September 22 to 28, 2026. The annual gathering will bring together global leaders to deliberate on key issues such as climate change, sustainable development, international peace and security.
