Osun Govt Confirms EFCC Restriction on State Account Ahead of Gubernatorial Election - The Alternative News

The Osun State Government has confirmed that one of its accounts has been placed under restriction by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), just days before the forthcoming governorship election.

Reports indicate that the affected account, domiciled with First Bank of Nigeria, was placed on a “Post No Debit” status, effectively preventing withdrawals. The account is said to be primarily used for the payment of workers’ salaries.

The development comes shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke raised concerns over an alleged plan by the anti-graft agency to freeze state government accounts and those of key officials ahead of the August 15 governorship poll.

Reacting, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the action as an attempt to disrupt government operations in the lead-up to the election.

Governor Adeleke maintained that there is no legal basis for the restriction, arguing that the EFCC lacks the statutory authority to freeze accounts belonging to a state government.

A source within the administration, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the restriction has already taken effect.

“I can confirm that the state government account has been frozen by the EFCC. It is no longer an allegation. The governor will address the press shortly to update the public on the situation,” the source said.

The EFCC has not issued an official statement clarifying the reason for the action.
