Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have successfully rescued five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapade, who were abducted by suspected armed bandits from a private off-campus hostel.

The incident, which occurred on July 29, 2026, at about 7:45 p.m., was initially confirmed by the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG), raising widespread concern among students, parents and the general public.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated, “The students have been rescued.”

The Ogun State Joint Campus Council of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), in collaboration with the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), also confirmed the rescue in a joint statement issued on Thursday.

“We are delighted that the students have been rescued alive and unharmed, bringing an end to the anxiety experienced by their families, colleagues and the entire Nigerian student community,” the statement read.

The student bodies commended the Nigeria Police Force, the State Security Service, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, local vigilantes and other security agencies for their swift and coordinated response.

They further urged students to remain vigilant, security-conscious, and cooperative with relevant authorities to enhance safety within campuses and surrounding communities.

The rescue comes barely a day after NANS issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government and security agencies, demanding the safe return of the abducted students and threatening to embark on peaceful protests if the deadline was not met.
