Babcock University High School and Cornerstone Academy emerged as top performers in the Spelling Bee and Debate competitions respectively at the 2026 Isanbi Day Education Programme organised by the Ilisan Youth Development Association (IYDA).

The competitions formed part of activities organised by IYDA to mark the 49th Isanbi Day Anniversary and brought together students from secondary schools in and around Ilisan to demonstrate their academic knowledge, confidence and communication skills.

In the Junior Secondary School Spelling Bee Competition, Ayeni Flourish of Babcock University High School emerged as the overall winner after an impressive performance.

Oremuyiwa Opemipo of Aunty Fola High School secured the second position while Oshosanwo Habibat of Future Leaders Group of School emerged third.

The competition provided the students with an opportunity to test their vocabulary, concentration and ability to spell correctly under competitive conditions.

The Senior Secondary School Debate Competition also produced an engaging contest as participating schools presented arguments for and against the motion: "Government should prioritise vocational skills training over university education for youth empowerment."

Cornerstone Academy emerged first in the debate competition while Highbrow Private School took the second position. Babcock University High School secured the third position.

The debate provided an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their research abilities, public speaking skills, confidence and capacity to present and defend their positions on an issue relating to youth development and education.

The competitions were part of IYDA's broader effort to encourage academic excellence, healthy competition and personal development among young people in Ilisan.

Speaking during the programme, the Founder and Pioneer Chairman of the Ilisan Youth Movement, now Ilisan Youth Development Association, Evang. Olalekan Ifede, who is also the Executive Chairman of Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board, encouraged the students to remain determined in their studies and take advantage of opportunities that could contribute to their development.

He commended the participating students, teachers and organisers for the successful competitions and stressed the importance of dedication and hard work in achieving their aspirations.

The Zonal Education Officer, Ikenne, represented by Mr. Kolawole Rotimi Johnson, also encouraged the students to remain committed to their education. He further suggested that Yoruba Language should be incorporated into future editions of the Spelling Bee to promote the appreciation of the indigenous language.

The Chairman of IYDA, Alhaji Usman Simisaye, commended the participants for their conduct and charged them to always compete with integrity while appreciating the Education Programme Committee for its efforts in organising the competitions.

The successful competitions formed a major highlight of the 2026 Isanbi Day Education Programme and reinforced IYDA's commitment to creating platforms where young people can discover, develop and showcase their talents.
