2027: Makinde Vows to Serve One Term if Elected President - The Alternative News

The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027, promising to establish a transitional government of national unity.

Makinde also challenged President Bola Tinubu to make the Federal Government’s petroleum pricing template public, insisting that Nigerians deserved transparency in the determination of fuel prices amid persistent economic hardship.

The Oyo State governor accused the Tinubu administration of failing to deliver on key promises, including improved electricity supply and policies aimed at promoting alternative energy sources.

He spoke at the APM North-East town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, where he outlined his party’s proposed approach to governance, anchored on transparency, public participation and power-sharing.

Makinde argued that expertise in addressing Nigeria’s challenges was not exclusive to those holding public office, urging the Federal Government to disclose how petroleum prices were determined.

“The fact that you are in government or the Presidential Villa does not make you the only Nigerians with sense. We have other citizens who can dissect issues and proffer solutions,” he said.

He criticised the administration’s policies on compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles and the naira-for-crude initiative, arguing that they had not delivered the expected results.

Makinde also recalled Tinubu’s promise to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges within four years, questioning the administration’s performance in fulfilling its commitments.

He said the 2027 general election should mark a departure from what he described as a culture of political deception, promising to be honest with Nigerians about the country’s challenges.

“2027 will mark the end of the politics of lies and deceit. It is a time when we will all come together to establish a reset agenda and tell Nigerians the whole truth,” he said.

Addressing concerns about the concentration of political power in certain parts of the country, particularly among northern stakeholders, Makinde promised to run an inclusive administration that would accommodate Nigeria’s diverse interests.

“I stand before you today to tell you that the government you will put in place from May 29, 2027, will be a transitional government of national unity. Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government,” he said.

Makinde explained that the APM had delayed the release of its manifesto to enable the party to consult stakeholders and incorporate their views before finalising its policy proposals.
