2027: Peter Obi Submits One-Term Presidency Proposal to Opposition Coalition - The Alternative News

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally submitted a one-term presidency proposal to the newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed by Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, in an interview confirming Obi’s commitment to serving a single four-year term if elected.

Obi, who ran for president in the 2023 elections, said on Monday that any presidential candidate from the South must be willing to step down by May 28, 2031, in line with Nigeria’s unwritten power rotation agreement and the zoning principle between the North and South.

“We have presented it to the coalition. It is there for them to make a decision,” Tanko said. “But we are confident it can work. This is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that.”

He emphasized that although Nigeria’s constitution allows for two presidential terms, Obi believes one term is sufficient to execute his developmental vision and restore public trust.

Obi is part of a broad coalition that includes Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, all prominent figures from different political backgrounds, who have united to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

On Tuesday, the coalition adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform. However, the move has sparked controversy within the ADC, with a faction rejecting the decision and warning of a possible hijack of the party structure.

Despite the internal party tensions, Obi’s one-term proposal is seen as a strategic olive branch to unify the coalition’s diverse interests, particularly among Northern politicians concerned about the duration of power held by the South.

Tanko concluded that Obi’s willingness to serve a single term underscores his commitment to national unity, equity, and reform-driven governance.
