Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias launched a brutal overnight attack on the Bindi community in the Ta-Hoss district of Riyom LGA, Plateau State, killing at least 20 people and injuring many others on Monday night.

According to a statement by the Riyom chapter of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), the attackers carried out a coordinated house-to-house massacre, targeting women, children, and the elderly who were unable to escape. Survivors identified the assailants as Fulani extremists armed with sophisticated weapons.

The group condemned the attack, noting that it occurred despite the presence of security forces and military assets in the area. Homes were razed, families displaced, and trauma deepened.

COPDEM stressed that the assailants are not "unknown gunmen" as often claimed, stating their hideouts have been reported to authorities repeatedly but no decisive action has been taken.

The group demanded urgent intervention from President Bola Tinubu, the Plateau State Government, and security agencies. They called for a military operation to dismantle known terrorist enclaves, a state of emergency in the region, and immediate humanitarian aid for survivors.

“We are tired of condolence visits and press statements that offer no real protection,” the statement read. “Our people deserve more than sympathy. They deserve security, dignity, and justice.”
