Buhari’s Death: Tinubu Declares Seven Days of Mourning, Flags to Fly at Half-Mast - The Alternative News

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London following a prolonged illness.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, President Tinubu directed that all national flags across the country be flown at half-mast for seven days beginning immediately.

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” the President stated.

He further disclosed that an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting will be held on Tuesday, specifically to honour the late president.

Tinubu also announced that the Federal Government will hold a state funeral for Buhari in recognition of his “towering contributions to our country.”

“The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his legacy,” Tinubu said.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, is expected to be buried in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday.

His death was confirmed by his former media aides, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmad, in separate statements posted on X (formerly Twitter).
