Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria’s political spectrum following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London after a prolonged illness.
The sad news was confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, who also announced that Vice President Kashim Shettima had been directed to travel to the UK to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria. The late President’s longtime media aide, Garba Shehu, also issued a brief statement confirming the passing.
In his tribute, former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola described Buhari as:
“A leader who served Nigeria with deep conviction and unwavering principle. His commitment to integrity and national unity defined his public service… Nigeria has lost a statesman who believed deeply in our potential as one nation.”
He added that “May Allah forgive him, accept his service, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”
Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, called Buhari
“A father, mentor, and a towering figure whose life was defined by service, sacrifice, and unwavering integrity. I was privileged to work closely with him… Nigeria has lost a rare gem. I have lost a father and mentor.”
Malami praised Buhari’s legacy of discipline, transparency, and moral clarity, noting that his leadership “will continue to shape our national conscience for years to come.”
Other notable figures also joined in mourning:Senator Natasha H. Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) posted on Facebook:
“May Allah accept the soul of President Muhammadu Buhari in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amen.”
Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani wrote, “May Allah forgive his soul and grant him Aljanna Firdausi. Amin.”
President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria both as a military Head of State and as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. He was known for his strong stance on anti-corruption, discipline, and national unity.
