The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.
The revered monarch, who was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, died on Sunday, marking the end of an era in the Ijebu Kingdom. Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and ruled for over six decades with wisdom, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to the progress of his people.
A proud member of the House of Anikinaiya, Oba Adetona was widely respected not only within Ijebuland but also across Nigeria for his integrity, candour, and contributions to national discourse.
His passing comes just hours after the death of his longtime friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London after a prolonged illness.
Oba Sikiru Adetona's legacy as a courageous voice in traditional leadership and a symbol of stability will remain etched in the annals of Yoruba and Nigerian history.
