The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has announced the suspension of its three-month-old strike, with teachers set to resume work on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The decision followed an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, where the union confirmed the payment of the new minimum wage along with five months’ arrears.
“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the NUT stated in its communiqué.
The strike, which began in March 2025, had paralyzed academic activities in public primary schools across the territory. It was sparked by unpaid wages and entitlements.
The NUT acknowledged the role of the FCT Minister, whose intervention and engagement with relevant stakeholders led to the disbursement of ₦16 billion from the Area Councils’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). This funding was used to offset part of the salary backlog and ensure wage compliance.
As part of the agreement, a special committee is expected to be inaugurated within two weeks to reconcile all outstanding teacher entitlements and propose a sustainable funding framework.
However, the union issued a strong warning, stating that it would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to fulfill its commitments.
The NUT expressed appreciation to its members for their resilience and extended gratitude to traditional rulers, civil society groups, and stakeholders who supported their cause during the prolonged industrial action.
