Spanish police have revealed preliminary findings in the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, indicating that he was likely behind the wheel and speeding at the time of the fatal crash.
Jota lost his life alongside his brother, André Silva, in a devastating accident that occurred early last Thursday in the Zamora province of northwestern Spain. The Lamborghini they were travelling in is believed to have suffered a tyre blowout, leading to the fatal crash.
On Tuesday, investigators disclosed that tyre marks and other forensic evidence strongly suggest that Jota was driving the vehicle. “All the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota,” police said.
The investigation has been complicated by the intensity of the fire that erupted following the crash, which almost completely destroyed the vehicle, leaving few recoverable clues.
Authorities also noted that the location of the crash is not considered a traffic black spot, suggesting the accident was likely due to the vehicle’s speed and possible mechanical failure.
