US Government Tightens Visa Rules for Nigerians - The Alternative News

Effective July 8, 2025, the United States government has revised its visa policy for Nigerian nationals, reducing the validity of most non-immigrant visas, such as tourist and business visas, to single-entry and three months duration.

The policy change comes as a reciprocal action in response to Nigeria’s own visa framework for U.S. citizens. The new measure will apply only to visas issued from July 8 onwards, while those granted prior will remain valid under their original terms.

In a statement issued Tuesday by the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, the Department of State clarified:

“Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period.”

The Embassy added that visa reciprocity is a global standard and is “subject to review and change at any time,” which could include adjustments to entry frequency and duration.

This development is expected to impact travel plans for many Nigerians, particularly frequent travelers, business professionals, and tourists, who previously benefited from longer-validity, multiple-entry U.S. visas.
