The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, aiming to wrest power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Adelabu, a former governorship candidate under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019, made the announcement during consultative meetings with stakeholders in Ogbomoso and Oyo zones.
Speaking in Ogbomoso at the residence of APC chieftain Ayoade Adeseun, Adelabu stressed the importance of grassroots engagement and coalition-building ahead of the polls. He promised a non-imposed, competitive process within the APC and vowed to lead an inclusive administration if elected.
He also called for unity within the party, urging aggrieved members to reconcile for the greater good of reclaiming the state from PDP control. Adelabu emphasized the political significance of the Ogbomoso and Oyo zones, expressing confidence in his ability to emerge victorious based on his prior experience.
In Oyo town, he pledged to ensure equitable treatment for all regions and described Oyo as a symbolic and historical hub within the state. The minister also used the platform to endorse President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, stating that the Yoruba deserve to complete a two-term presidency and that Nigeria stands to benefit from Tinubu's continued leadership.
Governor Seyi Makinde of the PDP, currently serving his second and final term, is expected to support a successor in the 2027 race.
