Doyin Abiola's Demise: Governor Abiodun Mourns, Hails Her Legacy - The Alternative News

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Doyin Abiola, widow of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

Dr. Abiola, a trailblazing journalist and former Managing Director of the National Concord Newspaper, reportedly died on Tuesday at the age of 82.

In a heartfelt condolence message issued on Wednesday, Governor Abiodun described Dr. Abiola as a remarkable woman who was not only a devoted partner to her husband but also an accomplished figure who made immense contributions to journalism and Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Doyin Abiola, a remarkable woman whose contributions to society and unwavering support for her late husband during the tumultuous period surrounding the June 12, 1993 presidential election in Nigeria will forever be remembered,” the governor said.

He noted that Dr. Abiola began her journalism career with the Daily Sketch Newspaper, had a brief stint at Daily Times, and later rose to become the Managing Director of the Concord Group of Newspapers, owned by her husband.

“She displayed excellent spirit in the fight for the validation of the annulled June 12 election as the person in charge of the Concord Group of Newspapers, owned by her then embattled husband,” he added.

Governor Abiodun praised her courage, dedication to justice, and commitment to democratic ideals, particularly during Nigeria’s most politically turbulent period.

“Her commitment to these principles, particularly during a time of great political unrest, demonstrated her courage and unwavering belief in the power of democracy,” he said.

He further emphasized her resilience, noting how she stood by her husband through trials and adversity, providing encouragement and strength amid the nation's political struggle.

“As we reflect on Dr. Abiola’s life, it is essential to acknowledge the sacrifices she made alongside her husband. Her unwavering dedication to his vision for a better Nigeria will never be forgotten.”

Beyond her political influence, the governor lauded her impact on journalism, stating that she would be remembered as a beacon of professionalism and integrity in the media industry.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and all who admired her. We must continue to uphold her ideals and strive for the principles she passionately advocated throughout her life,” the statement concluded.
