A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, has dragged her husband, Usman Shuaibu, before a Shari’a court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, over alleged neglect and inadequate provision.
The case was heard on Wednesday, with Bello communicating through sign language, interpreted by Aisha Sulaiman.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Bello accused her husband of starving her, claiming he gives her only N50 per day for food.
“We got married in 2016, and my parents provided food for us. The problem started when the food they gave us finished,” she said.
She further alleged that her husband, who is a tailor, has refused to take financial responsibility for the household.
“When I delivered my baby, he couldn’t pay the hospital bill. It was his mother who had to provide the money,” Bello told the court.
She explained that although both families had previously intervened and urged her husband to live up to his responsibilities, he allegedly refused to change. As a result, she asked the court to dissolve the marriage.
In response, Usman Shuaibu denied all the allegations leveled against him by his wife.
The presiding judge, Malam Kabir Muhammad, adjourned the case and directed both parties to return to court with their parents or guardians on August 25.
